Suspect accused of striking Salem officer in face

SALEM — A police officer was injured when a suspect struck him in the face with a handcuff, police said.

Raymond Jalbert, 47, of Salem was belligerent with police after he was picked up on charges of drunken driving at 1:30 yesterday morning, police said. Jalbert was stopped on Main Street and given a field sobriety test. When officers tried to get him into the back of the cruiser, he became combative, police said.

Police twice used a Taser on Jalbert's leg before he cooperated, according to police. When police were booking Jalbert at the station, he swung at an officer with a handcuff, leaving a large scrape and cut on the officer's face, Capt. Shawn Patten said.

Jalbert was fighting with police and he was subdued with the Taser again, Patten said. Both Jalbert and the officer received medical attention after the incident.

Jalbert was held on $1,000 cash bail pending arraignment. He was charged with DWI, assault on a police officer, disobeying a police officer, and an open container violation.
