BRENTWOOD — A Londonderry bookkeeper accused of stealing more than $200,000 from a client has hired a private investigator to gather evidence for her defense.
Karen Susi, 47, of Hudson faces 20 counts of theft by unauthorized taking. Prosecutors allege that Susi stole thousands of dollars from B&K Industrial Finishing of Concord between January 2007 and July 2008.
Documents recently filed in Rockingham County Superior Court show that Susi requested permission to spend $2,500 to hire a private investigator for "locating, interviewing and subpoenaing essential defense witnesses."
Susi allegedly led the owners of B&K to believe that bank loans and debts were being paid off when she was actually writing checks to herself. During a four-month stretch, she wrote checks to herself totaling $43,355, police said.
Susi tried to hide the alleged thefts by moving all the company's business records to her own storage areas, according to a police affidavit.
She is scheduled to stand trial beginning March 15. The trial is expected to last three days.
