Learn about Londonderry's Civil War soldiers at Leach Library

LONDONDERRY — Londonderry Leach Library will host "Granite State Sacrifice during the American Civil War" presented by Steven Closs at 7 p.m. today. The program is being sponsored by the Londonderry Historical Society.

Closs is a New Hampshire Civil War historian and author who has studied the American Civil War for the past 20 years. He has written two books on the subject.

Through his research, he has compiled sketches and profiles of the Granite State soldiers who died, and he will pay particular attention to the 12 fallen soldiers from Londonderry at this event.

The program is free and open to the public. It will be held in the library's lower-level meeting room. Light refreshments will be served.

Enter floral designs in 'Over the Rainbow'

ATKINSON — The Atkinson Garden Club will present its flower show, "Over the Rainbow," tomorrow at the Atkinson Community Center.

From noon to 8 p.m., the Atkinson Community Center at 4 Main St. will be transformed into a floral design and horticultural representation of the magical place where Dorothy, Toto and company entertained us all.

Design classes include creative representations of the ruby slippers, Emerald City, the Wicked Witch and the flying monkeys. The horticulture division welcomes entries under designations including the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and many others. Also featured will be special exhibits on water conservation and endangered species. Special youth educational exhibits will be highlighted in the section "Munchkin Land."

The Horticultural Division is open to all amateur gardeners, and must be of fresh and well identified plant material grown by the exhibitor. For more information, call Joanne Krause at 622-1978 or Catherine Persson at 362-6013.

Food Fest 2010 set at mall Sunday

SALEM — The Mall at Rockingham Park will host Food Fest 2010, a free event showcasing local farms and businesses, on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

The event in the food court parking lot will feature local produce, live music, entertainment and more. Acoustic singer/songwriter Matt Jackson will perform.

Farmers from around the state will participate. For kids, there will be Kidgits Back to School Fun activities, outdoor games, giveaways and a bounce house.

Free reusable totes filled with product samples and retailer coupons will be given to those who register, while supplies last. A food drive will be held for the Merrimack Valley Food Bank; all nonperishable food items are welcome.

Sandown seniors head to Woodstock next month

SANDOWN — Sandown seniors, age 60 and older, are invited to register for the upcoming Fall Foliage Trip to Woodstock, Vt., on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Departure will be at 8:30 a.m. from the Edward Garvey Recreation Facility, 25 Pheasant Run Drive. The return will be approximately 5:30 p.m.

A coach bus will travel to Woodstock with a coffee break on the way. Browse at Gillingham's, a true country store, have lunch and see Quechee Gorge. The trip is complimentary (with the exception of lunch) for Sandown seniors only. Lunch and driver gratuity will be the responsibility of each participant. Call the recreation office now to register at 887-1872.

Proof of age and residency may be required. Registration will remain open until Monday, Oct. 4 or until seats are filled, whichever comes first. A waiting list may be offered.

Wellness opportunities abound in Derry

DERRY — Derry Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Wellness Open House Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Alexander-Carr Park, 28 Pierce Ave.

The free event is open to all adults age 18 and over. Programs will include Zumba with Julie Dolliver, tai chi with Debbie Cushman-Roy, yoga with Mariellen Rowe, RSVP Bone Builders with Brenda Hathaway, and line dancing with Sharon Dobbie.

Short previews of these adult programs will be held every 10 to 15 minutes. Join in or just watch.

The five programs are designed to increase coordination, decrease stress, and generally improve physical and mental health.

Blood drive scheduled in Londonderry

LONDONDERRY — There will be a blood drive at the Lions Hall, 259 Mammoth Road, on Tuesday from 1 to 6 p.m.

Donors will receive an American Red Cross reusable tote bag.

Salem High opens its doors to parents

SALEM — Salem High School's Open House will be held on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 7. to 8:30 p.m.

The schedule for freshman parents is: 7 to 8:05 p.m., four core classes with freshman teachers; 8:05 to 8:15 p.m., passing time; 8:15 to 8:30 p.m., Block 4 classes.

For sophomores, juniors and seniors, it is: 7 to 7:15 p.m., 7:15 to 7:25 p.m., passing time; 7:25 to 7:40 p.m., Block 2 classes; 7:40 to 7:50 p.m., passing time; 7:50 to 8:05 p.m., Block 3 classes; 8:05 to 8:15 p.m., passing time; and 8:15 to 8:30 p.m., Block 4 classes.

Get moving with Zumba classes in Sandown

SANDOWN — No experience is needed to join Zumba, a Latin inspired dance-fitness, cardio-based workout that incorporates sculpting exercises to help tone the entire body.

Certified Zumba instructor Julie Dolliver will lead dance and rhythms, including salsa, reggaeton, merengue, cumbia and more. Wear comfortable clothes, broken-in sneakers and bring a water bottle. Try one of two free 30-minute demo classes on Tuesday, Sept. 28. Session one will run from 6:30 to 7 p.m., session two from 7:20 to 7:50 p.m.

Registration for the demo is suggested. Demo walk-ins will be allowed on a space available basis. Registration is $45 for this six-week session. Class will take place once a week on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Edward Garvey Recreation Facility, 25 Pheasant Run Drive. Non-residents pay $50 per session. Space is limited and early registration is strongly suggested. Registration forms are at sandown.us, with hard copies available at Town Hall and the recreation facility during regular business hours.     Murphy voted not to recommend the plan to build a 7,600-square-foot, one-story facility on Veterans Way in January. But he told more than 50 people at last night's meeting he now feels differently.
