Derry firefighters help deliver baby

DERRY — Firefighters played stork yesterday, transporting a baby and its mom to Parkland Medical Center after the child was born at home.

Firefighters responded to Elm Street about 3 p.m. after receiving a report of a childbirth with complications, fire Lt. Mike LaValley said.

The woman's husband met firefighters at the door and explained frantically that his wife was inside with the baby.

The woman had already given birth and was holding the baby, LaValley said.

Firefighters cut the umbilical cord and transported mother and child to the hospital, glad to have been part of the experience.

"It is one of those joys that we get to do once in while," LaValley said.

Battalion Chief Mike Doyle said firefighters often respond to difficult circumstances or at the end of a life.

"It's nice to be at the beginning," he said.

Parkland's nurse supervisor provided no information about the baby or the mother yesterday.
