SALEM — Last week, seven members of “The Crew,” the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salem’s Torch Club, presented the Salem Animal Rescue League with a generous donation of supplies.
Members of “The Crew” chose to donate items to SARL as part of Protect Animals With Service, the national project for Torch Clubs across the United States.
“When we learned that the Torch Club national project was going to be something that had to do with protecting animals, we immediately thought of getting involved with the Salem Animal Rescue League,” said Cecilia Souza, Torch Club president.
Although the presentation of gifts to SARL occurred just last week, club members spent the past few months planning, organizing and running a fundraiser.
It all started with a plan to create a book about animals.
“Everyone loves animals,” said Maddie Craig, Torch Club secretary. “We wanted to get the members involved, and this was a fun way to do it.”
“Animal Frenzy,” the book they created, included pictures of club members’ pets and some fun facts about animals. The books were then sold to raise money to buy supplies for SARL.
“The Torch Club members worked really hard on this project,” club advisor Rachel Hill said. “It is awesome to witness how their commitment to this project has helped them come together as a team and helped out an organization in the community.”
Torch Clubs are chartered by Boys and Girls Clubs of America. They are small group, leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 11 to 13.
