WINDHAM — Police may never know what caused a Derry father's car to cross the center line on Route 28 and crash into a pickup truck last month.
Stephane St. Pierre, 41, suffered fatal injuries in the head-on crash near the Salem town line on Aug. 17. He was transported to Parkland Medical Center in Derry and transferred to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, where he was pronounced dead.
Windham police Capt. Michael Caron said Wednesday the department still is waiting for a toxicology report on St. Pierre from Massachusetts officials.
State police will conduct a forensic evaluation of the vehicle — to see if there was a mechanical failure — only if charges are filed in the case.
Windham police do not intend to file charges because St. Pierre died, Caron said.
St. Pierre's 5-year-old daughter, a passenger in his Honda Accord, suffered non-life threatening injuries, Caron said.
The driver of the Ford-150, Richard Jones, 47, of Salem, also suffered non-life threatening injuries, Caron said.
The Accord was traveling south on Route 28 at about 7:50 p.m. and crossed the middle turn lane, went into the northbound lane and struck the pickup truck, police said.
Neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash. Neither vehicle left skid marks, police said.
