The Eagle-Tribune

---- — SALEM — Kelley Library is gearing up for a summer filled with “Dig Into Reading” and “Beneath the Surface” events and activities. The library partakes in the nationwide 2013 Collaborative Summer Library Program with other New Hampshire libraries, using these theme for promotion and planning their events.

Brittany Tuttle, Kelley Library youth services librarian, has planned a summer full of activities just for teens, ages 12 and up, starting with a Beneath the Surface Bazaar on Tuesday, June 18, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

This pre-summer kick-off will introduce middle and high school students to the library’s first teen-centered summer program. At the bazaar, teens will participate in games, crafts and other activities that primarily feature recycled material.

Other activities planned throughout the six-week program include weekly crafts to make at the library; trivia night; a scavenger hunt; and helping younger children learn about maintaining the library garden. Teens are also invited to participate in the weekly Read-Make-Do game, where they can receive incentives for completing from three to nine library-related activities.

“Dig Into Reading” summer game and activities for children will kick off Tuesday, June 25, at 2:30 p.m. with Wildlife Encounter’s “Watcha Diggin’ For?” sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.

This 45-minute program featuring seven species of animals that live underground will be entertaining and educational for children of all ages and their families. Other presentations to look for this summer, all sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, include “Butterflies: Habits and Habitats” on July 10; “Howl at the Moon with a Ground-Dweller Tune!” on July 18; the STARLAB portable planetarium on July 25; and “Dig Into the Deep Sea” on July 30.

Corrie Chiknas, head of the Kelley Library Reed Children’s Room, has planned many exciting and informative events and activities for ages 5 to 11.

It starts with “Mystery, Magic, and Mummies,” a look at ancient Egypt at the MFA presented by Denise Doxey, curator, Ancient Egyptian, Nubian and Near Eastern Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on Thursday, June 27, at 2 p.m.

Other offerings throughout the summer include ancient hand painting; cave painting; Egyptian crafts and games; Reader’s Theater with face painting; and weekly crafts. Children can also participate in the Read-Make-Do game of activities selected for their age group.

The Teen Read-Make-Do games and the Children’s Read-Make-Do games will wrap up with bingo parties and grand prize raffles featuring prizes donated by local businesses. The generosity of local area merchants has always helped Kelley Library provide a rewarding summer program for the children of Salem.
