NH State Police deem Operation Care a success

CONCORD — New Hampshire State Police stopped more than 5,000 vehicles and made 40 drunken driving arrests over Labor Day weekend.

The Operation Care holiday weekend traffic enforcement effort started Friday and ended at midnight Sunday.

State police logged 30 accidents during the period, according to Public Safety Commissioner John Barthelmes.

Troopers also monitored speed through aircraft and radar zones, and worked extra patrols looking for alcohol and drug impaired drivers. Enforcement efforts were enhanced by a DWI sobriety checkpoint sponsored by the New Hampshire Highway Safety Agency.

State Police Col. Robert Quinn said the Operation Care holiday weekend enforcement effort resulted in: 5,058 vehicle stops, 40 DWI arrests, 1,516 court summonses for speed, 229 other court summonses, 2,869 warnings, 59 defective equipment tags, 12 commercial vehicle violations, five seatbelt warnings and seven seatbelt citations.

Barthelmes said the Department of Safety would continue to operate similar holiday and weekend traffic enforcement efforts to promote and emphasize the importance of highway safety.
