N.H. NEWS IN BRIEF

Mediocre results as moose season opens

CONCORD (AP) — Warm temperatures and windy conditions kept the success rate down a bit for the first weekend of New Hampshire’s moose hunting season.

New Hampshire Fish and Game reports 18 percent of the 281 hunters who received permits bagged moose during the hunt’s opening weekend, down from 25 percent last year. Moose biologist Kristine Rines said with their heavy winter coats, moose often bed down in the shade during warmer weather, causing them to not be as active.

The largest moose checked in during the weekend was a bull with a dressed weight of 820 pounds and a live weight of 1,200 pounds. It was taken by Dan Nocella of Laconia in Dixville.

The nine-day hunt continues through Sunday.

State, tanker owner agree to mediation

PORTSMOUTH (AP) — The owners of a tanker that struck a bridge connecting New Hampshire and Maine has agreed with the states to mediation.

The owners have been seeking a $2.4 million refund from the two states for the bond posted to release the vessel after the collision into the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge on April 1. The states sued the owners, saying the crew didn’t secure the tanker properly.

The owners of the Portuguese oil tanker MV Harbor Feature had said the two states are guilty of negligence. A trial has been scheduled for next year if the parties can’t reach an agreement.

The Portsmouth Herald reports the states and the tanker owners have agreed to mediation, a process that they expect to conclude by the end of next month.

Firefighters find meth lab at scene of fire

MANCHESTER (AP) — Manchester firefighters responding to an apartment fire said they found chemicals used in making methamphetamine, and so they evacuated more than two dozen people from the building.

Firefighters say the fire happened at a second-floor apartment on Sullivan Street on Sunday morning. The fire was contained to the kitchen, but residents were evacuated when the chemicals were discovered.
