Pelham teacher bound for Google academy in London

Heads to London to attend Google Teacher Academy

PELHAM — An educator from Pelham will participate in the international Google Teacher Academy.

Holly Doe, 41, whose responsibilities involve integrating technology in classrooms in the Pelham School District, will travel to London for the two-day program this December.

Doe said she was one of about 50 educators chosen worldwide and she is excited about the opportunity.

“I think I may be the first from New Hampshire,” Doe said.

“She absolutely is the first teacher from New Hampshire,” said Allison Mollica, an adjunct faculty member with the Virtual Learning Academy, a charter school based in Exeter.

Mollica has participated in training Doe and other New Hampshire teachers in Google applications.

Mollica said the Google program hears from hundreds, if not thousands of applicants, and is very competitive.

“Participants are selected based on their professional experience, their passion for teaching and learning, and their successful use of technology in school settings,” Google said of the program.

Doe applied unsuccessfully a year ago when Google had an academy scheduled close by in New York City.

Now she’s off for London instead.

“That’s a terrible thing,” she laughed.

Doe will get more than an education in Google software and Cloud-based programs.

Mollica said she will network with other educators knowledgeable in technology and be able to share what she learns with her colleagues in Pelham and other school districts.

“I will be training constantly through the day with advanced Google tools for the classroom,” Doe said.

She expects to share with Pelham students what she learns about popular Google applications such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps and Google Drive.

That will be important for Pelham.

Doe said Pelham Memorial School, the middle school, recently purchased about 30 Google Chromebooks for students to use in the library.

“Most of what our students do is Web-based,” Doe said.
