Rockingham Co. attorney, two others, suspended

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams, deputy county attorney Tom Reid and an unnamed third person from that office all have been suspended with pay as of earlier today, according to County Commissioner Kevin Coyle.

The County Commission met with the U.S. District Attorney's Office and the Attorney General's Office late yesterday, Coyle said. He said he could not reveal any details of that meeting.

The Attorney General's Office is in charge of the investigation.

Senior assistant attorney general James Boffetti will serve as acting county attorney, Coyle said.

Asked whether the FBI was involved or whether computers had been seized from the county attorney's office, Coyle said he could not comment.

Reached by phone earlier today, Reams said he was at a district attorneys' conference out of state.

"I can't talk about it," he said. "I don't know what's going on."

Coyle said Reams participation in the conference was not in an official capacity.

Reams was first elected county attorney in 1998.

His office, located in the county courthouse in Brentwood, prosecutes for 37 police departments, the county sheriff's department, state police and other state agencies.

The County Commission will oversee financial aspects of the county attorney's office for the time being, Coyle said.
