Salem officer OK after car mirror strikes him

SALEM — A police officer who was struck by a driver who refused to stop jumped into his cruiser and arrested the woman a half-mile away.

Officer Mike White was directing traffic during a power outage Monday afternoon when he motioned for the driver to stop at the intersection of Routes 28 and 111, according to Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten.

As the vehicle passed White, he was struck by its side mirror, but was not injured, Patten said.

The vehicle then sped through the intersection and headed south on Route 28. White pulled the driver over near Movie Scene, a half-mile down the road, Patten said.

Leah Keaney, 38, of Salem refused to cooperate with White and was placed in custody after struggling with the officer, Patten said.

She was charged with reckless conduct and disobeying a police officer, and later released on $2,500 personal recognizance pending her arraignment in Salem District Court.

Also Monday, a Pelham man was arrested in connection with another hit-and-run accident.

Jeffrey Langenfeld, 38, was charged with driving while intoxicated and conduct after an accident at the Depot intersection, Patten said.

He fled the accident scene and was later arrested at a nearby apartment complex.

Langenfeld was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail pending his arraignment.
