HAMPSTEAD — Approximately 25 people, mostly children, were evacuated after a small fire broke out at Hampstead Middle School yesterday evening.

The fire was reported shortly before 5 p.m. in a maintenance garage adjacent to the school’s gym, fire Chief Michael Currier said.

The fire, attributed to an electrical malfunction, sent smoke into the gym while students were attending basketball practice, he said.

It was quickly brought under control, but remained under investigation last night.

“The exact cause is unknown at this time,” Currier said.

All adults and children in the building were quickly evacuated as firefighters from five towns responded and two other communities provided station coverage, Currier said.

Large fans were set up at exits to the gym to remove the smoke. The school’s main doors were propped open to air out the building.

The garage was occupied by a plowtruck and other assorted equipment.

Firefighters responded to the fire from Hampstead, Salem, Atkinson, Derry and Danville. Station coverage was provided by Plaistow and Sandown.

Five fire trucks were still at the School Street school as of 6 p.m.

Currier said the building would be ready for classes today.
