NORTH ANDOVER — There were delays for trains traveling between Haverhill and Boston last night after a taxi cab drove onto the tracks off Sutton Street at about 7 p.m.
The taxi drove off, but police wanted the tracks inspected by railroad officials for damage before trains were allowed to pass through, North Andover police Sgt. T.J. McEvoy said last night.
That held up train service, including the MBTA's Commuter Rail between Haverhill and Boston, for about an hour.
The MBTA issued an alert saying the 6:20 p.m. train to Haverhill was experiencing a delay of 30 to 45 minutes from North Andover out.
Inbound trains were scheduled to leave Haverhill for Boston at 8:25 and 10:15 p.m. Outbound trains destined for Haverhill were scheduled to leave North Station at 8:40 and 10:35 p.m., and at 12:10 a.m.
Police cleared the tracks for use at about 8 p.m.
