SALEM — Three people were injured in a seven-vehicle crash this morning that closed part of Interstate 93 south for more than hour.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on the Lowell Street overpass between Exits 1 and 2, backing up traffic and causing police to close both southbound lanes.

The three people, none of whom received life-threatening injuries, were taken to area hospitals, according to Capt. Timothy Kenney of the Salem Fire Department.

One of the vehicles burst into flames, but the driver was able to escape safely, Kenney said. Traffic was diverted to Exit 2 and Route 28, he said. The southbound lanes were reopened by 7:30 a.m.

Ambulances from Salem and Windham responded. Aid was also requested from Derry because of multiple calls, Kenney said.

No details on the crash were available from state police.
