SALEM, N.H. — Two Massachusetts residents were killed when their pickup truck drove off the northbound lane of Interstate 93 at the entrance to the rest area and struck a tree, about shortly before midnight Friday.
New Hampshire State Police identified the driver as Michael Joyce, 29, of Stoneham, and the passenger as Karina O'Donnell, 23, of Merrimac.
According to state police, the 2006 Ford F-150 was heading north on the highway and for unknown reasons drove through the beginning portion of the off-ramp to the Salem rest area and into the woods at about 11:53 p.m.
The truck then struck a large tree before coming to rest near a small body of water, state police said.
The investigation is continuing, but state police said speed appears to be a factor.
Two of the three lanes of Interstate 93 north remained open throughout the investigation.
The Department of Transportation assisted with the closure of the emergency breakdown lane and right travel lane while troopers reconstructed the accident, gathered evidence and removed the vehicle from the woods.
Salem Police and Fire departments also assisted at the scene.
Family members at O'Donnell's home declined to comment yesterday.
Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to call NHSP Trooper Juan Infante at 603- 223-8985.
