HAVERHILL — The woman who jumped from a burning Haverhill apartment building holding her infant son in her arms suffered spinal injuries and at least one broken ankle, but the child escaped unscathed.

Christina Simoes, 24, remains in a Boston hospital after several hours of surgery last night, family members said. Her son, Cameron Strangman, 18 months is in the care of an aunt.

Family members said Simoes was home and Cameron was napping when the fire broke out in the Forest Acres apartment building yesterday afternoon. Smelling smoke, she opened the rear-door of her apartment and saw smoke and flames coming up the stairway.

She retreated to a rear bedroom, where she opened a window, popped out the screen and jumped with her child. She told family members the fire was moving so fast, she had no choice.

More coming later at eagletribune.com and in tomorrow's Eagle-Tribune.
