METHUEN — State and local police using a K-9 patrol and a search helicopter were looking for a man who fled from a flipped over car on Riverside Drive during a police chase about 10:30 p.m.

State Police Sgt. Ralph McNeil said a State Trooper had attempted to stop the vehicle on Water Street in Lawrence but the car, a red Ford Taurus SHO, with two men inside, took off.

As the chase picked up speed, the troopers got the license plate of the vehicle and then backed off, McNeil said.

As they came over a hill on Riverside, however, they saw the flipped over car in the middle of the road, he said. The two occupants had fled on foot toward Lawrence.

One man was caught on Lowell Street within minutes of the crash. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

The second man, believed to be armed with a handgun, was still at-large as of about 10:45 p.m.
