Bird in South Hampton tests positive for EEE

CONCORD (AP) - A bird found in South Hampton has tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis, the second bird to test positive for the disease this year, the state Department of Health and Human Services said yesterday.

The other bird was found earlier this month in Hampstead.

The state's Public Health Laboratory also has identified the virus in mosquito pools found in Danville, Manchester, Fremont, Hampstead and Newton. Last month, the department declared a Triple-E threat in Rockingham County, making additional assistance available for communities under a new state law.

"This time last year, New Hampshire had already seen four human cases of EEE," Commissioner John Stephen said. "While we have not seen a human case this year, the mosquito season will last at least several more weeks, so we are not out of the woods yet."
