Ed was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was a life long resident of Lawrence. Ed worked for most of his career at General Tire and Rubber, Bolta Division, in Lawrence, and retired from the U. S. Post Office. Since retirement, Ed and his wife, Sophie, who recently passed away, enjoyed their retirement together for more than 20 years. Ed was very active and spent most of his time with this family. -

Haverhill — Hazel M. (Lothrop) Chase, 97, of Haverhill passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Penacook Place in Haverhill. She was born in Haverhill on Aug. 27, 1914, daughter of the late Horace W. and Lillian M. (Ward) Lothrop. She was educated in the Haverhill schools and was employed at the former Hoyt & Worthen Tannery in Bradford. Hazel was a member of the Fidelity Chapter No. 90 Order of Eastern Star and the Haverhill White Shrine. Hazel enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She was the wife of the late Harold F. Chase and is survived by her sons Sterling A. Hammer of Camp Verde, AZ and William D. Hammer and his wife Carolanne of Bradford, step-son Harold W. Chase and his wife Gail of Windsor, CT, grandchildren Eric Hammer, Sterling Hammer, Jr., Lynn Fyfe, William D. Hammer, Jr., Laurel Chase, Karen Koch, Courtney Peterson, great grandchildren Liam and Brenna Fyfe and Shelby Koch, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Irene is survived by her children, son Raymond, daughter Chris (David), and son Paul (Ana Maria). She will be missed by her grandchildren Marc, David, Amy (Scott), Paula, and Anthony. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Irene was preceded in death by her loving husband, Salvatore “Sam” Russo and brother, Joseph Zappala.

Methue, MA — Joseph Edward Coakley, 84, died Monday, May 21, 2012 at Nevins Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Coakley was born in Lawrence, the son of the late Joseph E. & America (LoPiano) Coakley. He was a graduate of Lawrence High School and Northern Essex Community College. Mr. Coakley served in the US Navy during WWII and Korea. In civilian life, he retired as a facilitator at Western Electric Co. He enjoyed restoring antique cars. He was a parishioner of St. Lucy Church in Methuen. The widow of Viola (Vallario) Coakley, he is survived by a son, Joseph Ernest Coakley and his wife Lorraine (Young) Coakley of Plaistow, NH; granddaughters, Tamara and her husband, Dave Cunha of Northwood, NH; Destinee and her husband, Kenneth DiPrima of Kennsington, NH, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Derry, NH — Joseph I. Gallant, 92, of Derry, NH died Sunday May 20, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Gallant was born in New Brunswick, Canada on January 10, 1920, a son of the late Manuel and Suzanne (Richard) Gallant. He was a resident of Derry since 1971 formerly living in Lawrence, MA. For 17 years Joseph was employed by Crown Cork & Seal as a line mechanic, retiring in 1987. He also worked part time for Shaws Supermarkets of Derry and Londonderry for 13 years. He was a member of the L’Assumption Association for more than 40 years and a communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Derry. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and his cat, Corona. Joseph’s family wishes to give special thanks to the In Home Services & Hospice of Manchester for their care.

Groveland — Edward J. Spurr Jr, 73, of Groveland passed away peacefully on May 16, 2012 at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport surrounded by his family. Edward was born April 14, 1939 to the late Edward Sr and Lena (Bean) Spurr. He was a school bus driver for Briscoe Company for 20 years and also worked for the Groveland Water Department from 1977 until his retirement in 2003. After his retirement he continued to work part time for the town of Groveland mowing the many ball fields and open space areas. He enjoyed mowing the neighborhood lawns as well as repairing small engines. He also loved spending time with his family relaxing by his pool, cruising on his boat and vacationing with his wife Jean in St. Martin and the Dominican.

She was formerly of the Shawsheen Village section of Andover and was married to the late Dr. Edmond R. Melucci, where they resided for many years. After his passing, she moved to Brockton to live with her sister Florence Harris until recently she moved in with her niece. She was active in the Shawsheen Village Women’s Club, Merrimack Valley Philharmonic Society and the Greater Lawrence Women’s Medical Society.
