Dr. Joey S. Rottman, 55
Posted: December 18, 2014 - 12:00 am

BOXFORD: Dr. Joey S. Rottman passed away suddenly at his home on November 15. A passionate educator and dedicated physician, he focused his career on promoting healthier lives for his patients and on helping medical students achieve professional success. A tireless advocate of osteopathic medicine, he was universally noted for his kindness and ready wit, and was equally at home in a hospital, clinic or classroom. He was, perhaps, most at home as a teacher and was known for dedication to medical education and for his talent in bringing creative and innovative practices into the classroom or clinical office. Dr. Rottman often used improvisational techniques he learned while attending classes at Chicago's famed Second City Theater and Improv Olympic to teach his students the importance of collaboration (supporting your partner) in the delivery of medical services in the current health care climate. Teaching the next generation of health care professionals played an important role in his life and Dr. Rottman was formerly an assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine in N.J. Prior to that, Dr. Rottman held academic positions at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Midwestern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. At the time of his death, he was the Medical Director of Integr8 Massachusetts in Burlington, and was previously employed by the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, in Lawrence. From 1997 until 2004, he was an attending physician at Access Community Health Network in Chicago where he served as the medical director of Midwifery Services. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Rottman showed his gratitude for life's gifts by giving back, especially by his dedication to caring for patients in underserved areas. Along with his clinical and educational positions, Dr. Rottman served as a content expert for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and as an obstetrics and gynecology consultant for the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners. He attended the University of South Florida College of Medicine and earned his doctor or osteopathic medicine degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. He received his undergraduate degree from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala. He is survived by his loving wife, Lauren Laplante-Rottman, whom he adored, and by his sister, Mia Rottman; nieces, Charlotte Laplante and Eva Knorr and nephews, Chris Laplante and Karl Birkmaier. He will be sorely missed by countless patients, students, colleagues and friends whose lives were made brighter by his persistent good humor, support, and friendship.
