Haverhill — Esmene (Alexander) Gonios, 96, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21, at Lawrence General Hospital, with her family by her side.
She was born in Haverhill on May 25, 1917, and was the daughter of the late James and Fannie (Koutrou) Alexander.
Esmene was educated in the Haverhill Public School System, and was a graduate of Haverhill High School and its extension courses for civil service. After graduating high school, she was employed at the former Remington Arms, as a chemical warfare inspector. She was later employed as a complaint investigator and tester at Western Electric, and finally as a buyer and sales clerk for Karelis Jewelers, which she retired from after 30 years.
She was a member of the Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, Haverhill.
Mrs.Gonios was predeceased by her husband, James Gonios, who died in 1996; and three sisters, Demetria Bluestein, Alkmene Alexander and Julia Banos.
Her survivors include a son, Andrew Gonios of Haverhill; a grandson, Nicholas Gonios of Raymond, N.H.; and a brother, Steve Alexander of Lynnfield; as well as several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral on Tuesday, December 24, at 11 a.m., at the Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154 Winter Street, Haverhill. Interment will follow in the Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. An hour of visitation at the H.L Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill, will precede the funeral service, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Holy Apostles Saints Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.
