Haverhill — Madelyn (Porton) Shyavitz, 99, of Haverhill passed away Monday, November 5, 2012 at Hannah Duston Health Care in Haverhill.
She was born in Lowell on Feb. 10, 1913, daughter of the late Samuel and Fannie (Mackin) Porton.
Madelyn was an active member of Temple Emanu-El in Haverhill and its organizations including Sisterhood, Hadassah and Brandeis. She was also active in the Haverhill community, volunteering at the former Hale Hospital Auxiliary, the Haverhill Public Library and Ruth’s House.
When she was in her sixties, Madelyn attended Northeastern University graduating with her BA.
She was the wife of the late Moses Shyavitz and is survived by her children, Gerald L. “Gerry” Shyavitz and his wife Pearl of Haverhill, John P. Shyavitz of Windham, N.H. and Anne L. Foran of Milpitas, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Abby Ostroff, Sara Kutchukian, Michael, Adam and Melissa Shyavitz, Patrick and Peggy Foran; four great-grandchildren, Londynn, Aurora, Bradley and Mia, former daughter-in-law, Sharon Shyavitz of Hampstead, N.H.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service on Friday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill. Interment will follow in the Children of Israel Cemetery, Haverhill. A memorial observance will be held on Saturday evening, Nov. 10 at her residence in Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Friends of the Haverhill Public Library, 99 Main St. Haverhill, MA 01830 or to Moses Shyavitz Memorial Fund at Temple Emanu-El, 514 Main St. Haverhill, MA 01830.
