West Newbury — Wayne Gilbert Maglione, 75, longtime West Newbury resident, passed away at Penacook Place in Haverhill on November 10, 2012 after a long illness.
He was born in Boston on September 8, 1937, son of the late Rocco and Margaret (Gilbert) Maglione. He grew up in Stoneham and was a graduate of Stoneham High School. He went on to college at Boston University, and graduate school at The College of William & Mary (Virginia Commonwealth University). In college he was president of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, from 1960 to 1961 and was recalled to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He married the late Rita Claire (Carroll) on February 28, 1965, and the two were married over 47 years before she passed away earlier this year on March 23, 2012. They resided in West Newbury for the past 44 years.
Mr. Maglione began his clinical career with the State of Massachusetts in 1961 as a staff psychologist at Danvers State Hospital. He continued his public career with the John T. Berry Rehabilitation Center in North Reading and served as Area Director for the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. He also maintained a private practice in Salem, NH and Methuen, and later worked full-time as a school psychologist in Lawrence, Lowell and Haverhill until his retirement in 1991, after 30 years of public service.
He was a member of the West Newbury School Committee and the West Newbury Council on Aging. He was an active member of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. He was a member and Past Master of Bethany Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in Merrimac as well as a member and Past Commander of the Haverhill Commandery. He enjoyed reading, following the Red Sox, and attending Masonic events throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Predeceased by his wife Rita (Carroll) Maglione and his son, Merritt H. Maglione, he is survived by five children, Margaret A. Maglione of Malibu, CA; Dana C. Maglione of West Newbury; Michael Maglione and wife Gwendolyn (Madrid) of Lynden, WA; Wayne M. Maglione of Rangeley, ME, and Maura (Maglione) Holloway and husband Robert of Weehawken, NJ. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Katlyn, Kristen and Matthew Maglione all of Lynden, WA and Thomas Luke Holloway of Weehawken, NJ; a brother, Michael Maglione and wife Beatrice; and two nephews, Alan and Brian Maglione, all of Stoneham.
ARRANGEMENTS: There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service for relatives and friends will be held Friday, November 16, 2012 at 11 A.M. at the Rural Cemetery on Chase Street in West Newbury, with services conducted by the Haverhill Commandery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Knights Templar Educational Foundation, 186 Tremont Street, Room 405, Boston, MA 02111-1003.
