Doris Lightner, 83

Tewksbury, MA — Doris Lightner, 83, died at home surrounded by family and friends on Friday, April 19.

The wife of the late Paul Lightner, Doris is survived by her son, Mark and his wife, Nancy of Methuen, Mass.; grandsons, Kyle and Christian Lightner; granddaughters, Lindsey and Nicole Hamblet; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Lightner of Andover, Mass.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Thelma and John Hutchison of Carlisle, Pa.; sister-in-law, Gloria Hanewald of Hamilton, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

Doris was born July 31, 1929, in New Bridgeville, Pa., and graduated from Nursing School in York, Pa., and Nurse Anesthetist School in Harrisburg, Pa.

Doris spent more than 20 years as a nurse anesthetist before dedicating the rest of her career to working with her beloved husband in the ballroom dance business, with more than 50 years as franchisees for the Arthur Murray Dance Studios. After being married in 1960, Doris and Paul began their career in 1961 with a studio in Elizabeth, N.J., and in 1973 acquired studios in the Philadelphia area. Their final move was to Boston in 1978, where she worked until retiring in 2009. Doris was an admired figure in the Arthur Murray organization worldwide, and has maintained close friendships with the Arthur Murray family over the years. During her retirement, she enjoyed attending the dance events and visiting with colleagues and students.

Doris loved the dance business, especially the people she met along the way. She also enjoyed spending many winters in Leesburg, Fla., and volunteering with her church community, but her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren and attending their many extracurricular events. She is well-known around the baseball fields of Andover.

ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service was held on Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m., at West Church, Haverhill, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fund for Adrienne Haslet.
