SANDOWN, N.H. — Robert E. Tobin, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, N.H.
Born in Newark, N.J., son of the late James and C. Lorraine (Walsh) Tobin, he graduated Cardinal Hayes High School, The Bronx, N.Y. with the class of 1949, and later received his Associate degree in Building Construction from Westchester Community College and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He later went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Iona College in 1964 and his education degree in 1994.
Mr. Tobin was a longtime resident of Yonkers, N.Y., before moving to Sandown eight years ago and formerly owned and operated Havender Monumental Works of The Bronx for 24 years. He was then employed for eight years as a computer science teacher at Xavier High School in Manhattan until his retirement in 1997.
A member of Saint Anne's Parish of Hampstead, where he was involved in the Catholic Engaged Encounter Program, he was also a member of the Maximillian Kolbe Council of the Knights of Columbus. He was formerly involved in the Lower Hudson Valley Engaged Encounter program, The Yonkers School District PTA and the Rotary Clubs of Bronx and East Yonkers. An avid sports fan, he also enjoyed reading and Opera.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanne M. (Havender) Tobin; a daughter and son-in-law, Maureen C. and Brett Johnson of Sandown; two sons and daughters-in-law, William J. and Joan Tobin of Newtown Square, Pa., and Daniel J. and Jennifer Tobin of Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers, R. James Tobin of Sheboygan, Wis., and David W. Tobin of Eugene, Ore.; a sister, Jean Galletta of Trinity, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Elena Tobin, wife of his late brother, Phillip of Osterville; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
