Ronald W. Rich, 75

Haverhill — Ronald Wentworth Rich, 75, passed away on December 28, 2013, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House, after a long battle with cancer.

Born on December 6, 1938, he was the son of Ernest Rich and Thelma Marsters Rich. He was born, raised and educated in Haverhill.

While still in school, he enlisted in the Naval Reserves from which he got an honorable discharge in 1957. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the Army from 1957 to 1960, and was stationed in Germany, and received an honorable discharge. Upon his return home, he married and started his family in Riverside.

He worked many years for Ma-Com and Corbam as an extruder operator until sickness had him retire in 2012 at the age of 73.

Proud of his community ties, he loved reminiscing about the old days of Haverhill. He was a true treasure to know.

An avid reader of newspapers, he was a wealth of information when it came to his sport teams, Red Sox and Patriots. His greatest trait was his love and respect for his friends and family. He enjoyed his mini-vacation trips to Las Vegas, Atlantic City and Foxwoods through the years, and enjoyed traveling to California and Florida, when the opportunity came about.

He was a member of the AMVETS post 147 and a lifelong member of the Crescent Yacht Club.

Besides leaving his beloved companion of 30 years, Jane LaValley, he leaves two sons, Scott Rich and his wife, Andrea, of Epping, N.H., and Ronald E. Rich of Hampstead N.H.; two sisters, Brenda Teague of Salem, N.H., and Beverly Murphy of Springvale, Maine; brother-in-law, Irving Strout of Hampton Falls, N.H.; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews; and bonus daughters, Angela LaValley Mahoney and Stephanie LaValley; and many good friends.

He will surely be missed by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis (Rich) Strout; a brother, Kendall L. Rich and his wife, Christine; and brother-in-law, Lynne Teague.

At this time the family would like to thank everyone for their love and support and all the staff at hospice and the Merrimack Valley Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Merrimack Valley Hospice House, 360 North Ave., Haverhill, MA 01830, or the charity of your choice.
