Manchester, N.H. — Margaret M. McVeigh, 94, of Manchester, N.H., died peacefully on October 18, at Maple Leaf Health Care Center, surrounded by her loving family, after a period of declining health.
Born in Manchester on December 7, 1917, she was the daughter of William Patrick and Katherine (Hurley) Devan. She was a lifelong resident of the Queen City.
Mrs. McVeigh graduated from Our Lady of Grace Academy, Class of 1934.
Until her retirement in 1978, she worked at Telephone Workers Credit Union of New Hampshire with many years of service.
In her early years, she was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church where she was a charter member of the ladies guild. Most recently, she was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church.
A loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, her family was the center of her life. Her bright, “Gramma” smile and twinkling blue, Irish eyes, were always affectionately watching over her children and grandchildren. She was proud of her Irish heritage as evidenced by her numerous trips to Ireland as well as her memorable St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
She was predeceased by her husband, Manchester Fire Lieutenant, John Joseph McVeigh, who died in 1976, as well as her son, William Joseph, in 2010, and her infant son, John James, in 1944. The oldest of four, she was also predeceased by her siblings, William L. Devan, Joseph F. Devan, and Katherine (Devan) Concannon.
Family members include two daughters, Maureen Whitfield and her husband, Bob, of Keene N.H., Ellen Menard and her husband, Arthur, of Sarasota, Fla.; two sons, Michael McVeigh and his wife, Jacklyn, of North Andover, Alan McVeigh of Manchester, NH; a daughter-in-law, Patricia McVeigh of Manchester, N.H.; her sister-in-law, Catherine Devan of Sarasota, Fla.; her eight grandchildren, William Whitfield, Laura Silk, Susan Laffond, Colleen Philibotte, Cheryl McVeigh, Brian McVeigh, John McVeigh, and Erin McVeigh; ten great-grandchildren, Ryan Whitfield, Johnny Silk, Nathan Laffond, Lily Laffond, Katie Philibotte, Maggie McVeigh, Abigayle McVeigh, Charlotte McVeigh, Jack McVeigh and Kelly McVeigh; one great-great-grandson, Connor Whitfield, and many nieces and nephews.
