Gordon P. Mills, 87


 

North Reding — Gordon P. Mills, 87, of North Reading and formerly of Reading, died at his home on Sunday, March 24, 2013. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean R. (McClintock) Mills.

Born in Boston, on May 6, 1925. He was the son of the late Earl Judson Mills and Gladys Mae (Spinney) Mills. He attended North Reading Public Schools and was a graduate of Reading Memorial High School. Gordon was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and was a part of the Red Ball Express and Battle of the Bulge. He was a Technician Fifth Grade and served from 1944 to 1946.

Gordon was a retired sheet metal worker and was a member of the Sheet Metal Duct Workers Union, No.17. He worked on building the skyline at the Hayden Planetarium. He has been a resident of North Reading for the past 75 years and a member of the Union Congregational Church, where he was the longest active member. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M., Call Firefighter for the North Reading Fire Department for fifty years and a member of the North Reading Conservation Commission. He helped to establish the Ives Memorial Forest and was an active Boy Scout volunteer for many years.

He loved his family, he always had a twinkle in his eye and he loved to tease. Gordon enjoyed the many years of camping at the Terrace Pines in Center Ossipee, NH.

Family members include his loving sons, Stephen Mills of Tucson, AZ and Robert Mills of Satellite Beach, FL; daughters, Susan Locke and her husband Ron of Somersworth, NH, Virginia Mills of North Reading and Sharon Libby and her husband Eric of Union, NH. Grandchildren, Jessica, Alison, Amanda, Jordan, Jake, Jonna and Jill and great grandchildren, Ana, Maya, Ava, Madison and Turner.

ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral service will be held at the Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill Street, North Reading on Thursday, March 28, at 10 AM. Calling hours will be held at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading on Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM.
