North Reading — John E. Davis, 82, of North Reading and formerly of Melrose, died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, August 17, 2013.
Born in Somerville, Mass., on July 17, 1931, he was the son of the late John E. and Helen (Conroy) Davis. John was a graduate of Wentworth Institute and Northeastern University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and served from 1952 to 1954.
John was a chemical engineer for Artisan Industries in Waltham and Polaroid in Waltham, where he worked for 24 years. He had been retired for the past 20 years. He was president of Sigma Epsilon Rho Honor Fraternity at Northeastern, 1967-1968, registered professional engineer, 1970, and past chairman of Boston Section of American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
John had been a resident of North Reading for the past 58 years. He was a member of St. Theresa’s Church and was a CCD teacher. John coached Little League and volunteered as a tutor in the local schools, he was a volunteer on various town government committees, and most recently, the Historical District Committee and Historical Committee. He was also a member of the Industrial Development Committee in the early 70s.
He adored his wife of 62 years and his seven children. He loved North Reading for what it offered his family.
In a day in an age when everything seems to be in a rush, he was always willing to sit down and enjoy a story with his family, or anyone else that was around. He was always a very patient family man. He was an avid reader of books and would discuss books that he read. John loved working around the house and doing yard work. He enjoyed walking around the neighborhood and he loved watching all his grandchildren participate in their concerts and ballgames.
Family members include his loving wife of 62 years, Betty L. (Currier) Davis; his sons, John J. and wife, Beth, of King George, Va., James E. and wife, Mary, of Middleton, Joseph E. and wife, Kristine, of North Reading, and the late John Michael Davis; daughters, Joanne M. Davis of Melrose, Jeanne M. Arena and husband, Joe, of Milford, N.H., and Jayne M. Downing and husband, Pau,l of Methuen; and 12 grandchildren, Jim, Billy, Kelly, Lindsey, Patrick, Erin, Amy, Emily, Paul, Matt, Amanda, and John.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held from the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow St., North Reading, on Friday, August 23, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Theresa’s Church, 63 Winter St., Route 62, North Reading. Calling hours will be on Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in North Reading.
