Haverhill — Barbara A. (Sylvia) Steele, 87, of Haverhill, passed away on Saturday, August 24, at her home at Haverhill Crossings. She was born in Fairhaven, Mass., on November 18, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Anna (Foster) Sylvia and Anton Sylvia. She was a graduate of Fairhaven High School.
Barbara was married in Washington, D.C., in September of 1955. As the wife of a Navy serviceman, she moved frequently while raising five children. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was her greatest joy. In 1972, she and her husband settled in Bradford, Mass., upon his retirement from the service. She was a retiree from the IRS service center in Andover.
Barbara is survived by her sons, William and his wife, Karen, of Atkinson, N.H., Thomas and his wife, Theresa, of Byram, N.J., and Jonathan and his wife, Colleen, of Framingham, Mass.; her daughters, Kim Steele and her husband, Rob Bate of Hudson, N.H., and Patricia, of Dunedin, Fla.; grandchildren, Jason Baldwin, Jeremy Steele, Tyler Steele, Kellie McMahon, Sean Steele, Alyssa Steele, Aisling Steele, Ben Bate, Cailyn Steele, Hanna Bate, Allison Steele, Mark Steele, Amelia Steele, and Jacob Steele; and great-grandsons, Chase Baldwin and Aiden Steele. She was the widow of Billy Steele, with whom she spent 44 years of marriage.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral on Thursday, August 29, at 10 a.m., from the H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer Street, Haverhill, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m., in Sacred Hearts Church, Bradford. Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Wednesday (TODAY), August 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. She will be buried next to her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., at a later date.
