Derry, NH — James F. Castles, Sr. of Derry, NH (formerly of Methuen, MA) passed away on Sunday, December 23rd at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He had recently celebrated his 79th birthday. Jim was a retired Lieutenant of the Lawrence Police Dept. He was appointed a reserve patrolman in Dec of '61. He was appointed a permanent patrolman in Feb of '66. He worked his way through the ranks from being a motorcycle patrolman to being appointed a Sergeant, Detective Sergeant and eventually Lieutenant. He retired as a Lieutenant in May of '84. Jim was also a veteran of the United States Army and served his country during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Lowell and held a degree in Criminal Justice. Jim was also offered a position with the Secret Service after scoring a perfect score on the Secret Service exam. He declined the offer after finding out he would have to move around the country with this job. He didn't think this would be ideal for a family and his family was the most important part of his life. Although he loved to golf, fish and boat nothing was more important to him than his family and doing these activities with his family.
Jim is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 55 years, Marilyn A. (Ross). They recently built a home on Big Island Pond where Jim had been a part time resident since his childhood and where he and his wife spent every summer with their 5 children. He is also survived by his son, James F. Castles, Jr. and Carole Wright and her sons, Joshua and Robert of Derry, NH; daughter, Maureen A. (Castles) Hovnanian and her husband, Mike of Methuen, MA; daughter, Cathy A. Castles and Kevin Lanouette of Chelmsford, MA; daughter, Maryellen Castles of Derry, NH; daughter-in-law, Lena Castles of Maui, HI; grandson, Michael Hovnanian of Methuen and granddaughters, Nichole and Natalie Giordano of Derry, NH and Sierra Castles of Maui, HI as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his son, David Castles
