Laurie (Goldberg) Hodas, 58

Formerly of Haverhill — Laurie Hodas, 58, died Sunday, January 20, 2013 in San Francisco, CA surrounded by her loving family, following a 25 year courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Laurie was the dear wife of 35 years to Mike Hodas, and the cherished daughter of Mike and Marilyn Goldberg of Haverhill, MA and Highland Beach, FL.

Laurie grew up in Malden and Haverhill where she graduated from Haverhill High in 1972, and earned her teaching degree from Wheelock College. As a Child-life Worker, she was a teacher for children in hospitals in Boston and Baltimore. Laurie & Mike moved to San Francisco in 1979, where she was a teacher in the San Francisco school district until she retired due to the increasing disability caused by MS. As Laurie’s life changed physically, she became a fierce and powerful advocate for the disabled.

She was a charter member and Chair of the Access Advisors at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco which received the Accessibility Award from the American Association of Museums, in part due to Laurie’s leadership. As an accessibility advisor, she worked with the city public transportation and other entities for disabled citizens of the San Francisco Bay Area. Her commitment to accessibility for the disabled has earned the deep respect and admiration of all she came in contact with.

Though Laurie’s body was weakened by the disease, her awesome spirit, fearless will, sharp wit, and gracious heart never dimmed. In addition to her parents and husband, she will be missed and always loved by sister Carol Goldberg and husband Lindsay Copeland of Kennebunk, ME; sister Ellen Horowitz and husband Lloyd of Raleigh, NC; brother Paul Goldberg and partner Joe Bell of Newburyport, MA; and brother-in-law Len Hodas of Austin, TX. Laurie also leaves her nieces Sara, Liz, Rachel and Hannah; aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Her life was enriched and made full by a tremendous team of care-givers who will forever be in Laurie’s heart.
