Limerick, Maine — Dana Lee Smith, 78, of Central Avenue, died on April 1, 2013, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, after a long illness and stay at St. Joseph's Manor in Portland. He was born in Salem, N,H., on February 4, 1935, a son of Edgar and Ruth Doubleday Smith. He was a 1952 graduate of Tenney High School in Salem. He proudly served in the U.S Navy and then spent a year at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro. He went on to graduate from East Coast Aero-Tech in Lexington, Mass. Dana married Patricia Baird Smith on September 23, 1961.
He worked for Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, CT, for a few years. He then worked for several years at Eastern Slope Airport in Fryeburg, where he was airport manager and ran his own aviation maintenance business. He later worked for a few years at Hawthorne College Airport in Antrim, N.H., where he was again airport manager and managed students as well. He went on to work at Victor Aviation in Sanford for a few years before founding and operating Air-Tech Aviation Maintenance School in Limerick for 28 years.
While in Limerick, he served a term as Selectman and enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as camping. Dana was a very accomplished musician and played guitar and other instruments in several local bands over the years. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Helen Smith Wakefield, and a brother, Milton Smith.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Baird Smith, formerly of Limerick and now living in Bainbridge, GA.; two daughters, Dorinda L. Lambert of Bainbridge, GA., and January Anne Croke and husband Robert of Fountain Inn, SC.; two sons, Darrin A. Smith and wife Ellyn of Limerick and Benjamin D. Smith of Houston, Texas; a sister, Olive Stickney of Salem, Mass.; also eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
