Haverhill — Carolyn L. (Lumsden) Johnston, 89, of Haverhill and formerly of Andover, died Monday morning, November 19, at Willow Manor, Lowell.

She was born in Reading, January 15, 1923, daughter of the late Bruce and Josephine (Grout) Lumsden.

Educated in the Reading school system, Mrs. Johnston graduated from Reading High School, class of 1941. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English from Radcliffe College in 1960, after her three sons reached school age.

She resided in Andover from 1948 to 1996 when she moved to Haverhill. While in Andover she was Dean of Students at the former Abbott Academy. When Abbott Academy merged with Phillips Academy, Mrs. Johnston became an Associate Dean at Phillips Academy. An avid bridge player, she also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, making hook rugs, embroidery and gardening.

Her survivors include her husband of 69 years, Malcolm G. Johnston of Haverhill; three sons, Malcolm A. “Andy” Johnston and his wife, Christine of Clio, Calif., Robert B. Johnston and his wife, Jan of Andover, Gerald L. Johnston and his wife, Ann Marie of Haverhill; seven grandchildren, Alexander, Emily, Nicholas, Alexandra, Adam, Nathan Johnston and Faith Hakesley. Mrs. Johnston was the grandmother of the late Matthew Johnston who died in 2001.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her Memorial Service on Thursday morning, November 29, at 11 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 26 White St., Haverhill, followed by a collation at the Village at Brickett Hill clubhouse at 1 p.m. The Village is off North Avenue in Haverhill. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover. There will be no calling hours.
