Barbara (Slater) Vayanos, 85

Andover — Barbara (Slater) Vayanos, 85, a 62 year resident of Andover died November 24, 2012 at the Lawrence General Hospital. She was born October 9, 1927 daughter of the late Wilfred and Vera (Crompton) Slater in Methuen.

Raised and educated in Methuen she was a graduate of Searles High School and continued her education graduating from Lawrence General Hospital School of Nursing becoming a Registered Nurse. She was employed by the American Red Cross, followed by MIT, and then ending her nursing career with Dr. Thomas Johnston at New England Allergy, retiring in 1992.

Barbara was an avid photographer and enjoyed puzzles and card games of all varieties. She enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and Casey Key in Florida where she traveled with her husband, “Jack” until his death in 2004. She also loved having lunch with friends and spending time with her grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Steven J. Vayanos and his girlfriend, Cely Thompson of Andover, Paul S. Vayanos of Andover; grandchildren, James and Matthew Vayanos; niece, Nancy Griffin and her wife, Maureen; and nephew, Earl Pacella and his wife, Cheryl; sister-in-law, Margaret Merrill; and brother-in-law, Gordon Merrill. She was predeceased by her husband, James John “Jack” Vayanos and her brother Robert Slater.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence St., Andover. Her funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. followed by burial at Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
