Haverhill — Kyriacoula “Coula” (Gounaris) Barakitis, 85, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
She was born in Haverhill on Sept. 7, 1927, daughter of the late Daniel and Thelxiope (Fanaras) Gounaris.
Coula was a graduate of Haverhill High School and U Mass Lowell. A member of the Haverhill Education Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association, and the National Education Association, Coula was a dedicated music teacher in the Haverhill elementary schools for over twenty years until her retirement. She later taught private piano lessons.
Coula was a member of the Holy Apostles Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Haverhill where she volunteered as a director and organist. She was also a member of the choir at the Annunciation Church in Newburyport where she was recipient of the Diocesan Laity Award.
She was the former wife of the late Nikolaos Barakitis and mother of the late Demetria E. Barakitis, who passed away in 1978. Coula is survived by her son, John N. Barakitis of Ashland, Ore.; her daughter, Tiffany L. and her husband, Daniel Kopko of Topsfield; three grandchildren, Alex, Juliet and Dylan Kopko all of Topsfield, as well as several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St. Haverhill followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Holy Apostles Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154 Winter St. Haverhill. Interment will follow in the Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. Calling hours at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions in her memory be made to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
