Santa Fe, NM — Carolyn Dole Smerage Dryfuss exited the stage of life peacefully at her home in Santa Fe, N.M., on March 15, 2013.
Carolyn Dole was born in Georgetown, MA, on Feb. 20, 1914, to Catherine Dwyer and Alfred Huntington Dole. She attended schools in Georgetown and married Donald Smerage of Topsfield, MA, in 1932. They produced two children, Glen and Bonolyn Smerage. Carolyn was a homemaker throughout her life, but she took outside employment when her children entered higher education. Initially, she was a clerk at Georgetown Pharmacy; subsequently, she cooked at a cafeteria of Georgetown public schools.
In 1978, Carolyn and Donald retired to Gainesville, Fla., where she lived for nearly 30 years. After his death, she married John Dryfuss of Long Island, N.Y., in 1981; they continued to reside in Gainesville. In 2006, Carolyn moved to Santa Fe, N.M., when her son moved there.
Carolyn enjoyed life, especially her family, her interests and activities, including music and cooking, and travel. She had recently enjoyed her 99th birthday with king crab and champagne. She now is reunited with her first husband, Donald Smerage, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Topsfield, MA. She will be missed by her family.
Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, all five siblings, her two husbands, and one grandson. She is survived by son Glen Smerage of Santa Fe, N.M., daughter Bonolyn Underwood of Maryville, Tenn., five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, all scattered over the country.
