Catherine M. Contarino, 83

Methuen — Catherine M. (Pellegrino) Contarino, 83, of Methuen, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 31, 2013, at Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Methuen. Catherine was born in Lawrence and was the daughter of the late Mario and Freda (Pappalardo) Pellegrino, and the widow of Emanuele Contarino.

Catherine was raised and educated in Lawrence, worked for 30 years at the IRS, and was a member of the National Association for Retired Federal Employees, a longtime member of the Greater Lawrence Italian Women’s Club, a longtime volunteer at Holy Family Hospital Auxiliary, a lifelong parishioner of Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church and a former member of the St. Rita’s Sodality.

The family would also like to acknowledge and thank the staff and caregivers at Methuen Village for the care and compassion they showed Catherine while she was a resident there.

Catherine, or "Katy," as she liked to be called, was truly beautiful, both inside and out. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Emanuele, taking wonderful care of him for almost 50 years after he was injured in a diving accident. She was a woman with endless energy, who always had time to help others when needed. Katy was an excellent cook and hostess; Sunday dinners at her home were a joy for her family. Katy enjoyed bowling, reading, and traveling. Her warm smile will be missed by all who knew her.

Catherine is survived by her daughter, Joyce Gagnon of Methuen; a son, Michael Contarino of Salem, NH; her grandchildren, Christopher Gagnon and his wife, Liza, Kara Gagnon and her boyfriend, Stefan LaBoy USMC, all of Methuen, Michael Contarino and Catherine Contarino both of Salem, NH and also “grandson” Michael Ahlman USAF, GA; her great-granddaughter, Brooke Gagnon of Methuen. She also leaves her sisters, Millie Pellegrino of Methuen, Margaret LaPiana of New York, Rose Marie Pellegrino of Florida, her former daughter-in-law, Shirley Contarino of Salem, NH and several nieces and nephews. Catherine was predeceased by her son-in-law, Ronald Gagnon.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visiting hours on Sunday, November 3, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. Her funeral Mass will take place on Monday, November 4, at 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 35 Essex St., Lawrence. Interment will follow at Bellevue Cemetery.
