Merton E. Roberts Jr., 88

Georgetown, MA — Merton E. Roberts Jr., 88, of West Newbury and formerly of Georgetown, passed away May 23, 2013, at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill. He was born August 14, 1924, son of of the late Sadie (Collins) Roberts and Merton E. Roberts Sr., and went through the Georgetown School system, graduating from the Perley High School. He was drafted at the age of 18 and proudly served his country during World War II with the 7th Army in France, and later transferring to the Third Army, serving under General Patton. He earned two battle stars, the European Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the good conduct ribbon and received the rank of Corporal as a gunner on the 90mm. His outfit was called in to help with the Battle of the Bulge.

After coming home from the war, Mert was very active in the town of Georgetown. He graduated from New England Institute in 1946 and joined his father and older brother in the family funeral home business. Mert and his older brother were the fourth generation of funeral directors in their family. He was a licensed embalmer and funeral director since 1950.

He was a member of the Georgetown Congregational Church since 1938, a member of the Charles C. Dame Lodge since 1954, a life member of the Georgetown VFW and American Legion and was a past member and president of the Georgetown Kiwanis Club.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, May 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Merton E. Roberts Jr and Conte Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown, MA 01833. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, at 11 a.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will follow in South Byfield Cemetery.
