Lawrence — Irene (Corradina Zuppardi) Salemi, 94, of Lawrence, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2014, at Lawrence General Hospital, surrounded by her beloved family. Irene was born in Lawrence, and was the daughter of the late Corrado and Concetta (Spadaro) Zuppardi.
A graduate of Lawrence High School, she also attended McIntosh Business School. Irene worked at the Lawrence Credit Bureau, Avco in Wilmington, and in later years, at the Turnstyle Department Store in Lawrence.
Irene was a loving wife, a great Mom and a wonderful Grandmother. Among her joys were a love of Italian cooking, reading mystery novels and singing. As a lifetime member of Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church of Lawrence, she was a member and a soloist of the choir for many years. She was noted for performing the “Ave Maria” for many local funerals. Her beautiful renditions of “O Holy Night” at midnight Mass on Christmas Eve are among the many special memories that her family will keep forever.
Her greatest joys, however, were centered around her family, especially her grandchildren, Jennifer and Peter. They will long cherish wonderful memories of times spent at Salisbury Beach with Grandma and Grandpa, sleepovers and meals at Grandma’s, and all the holidays they shared with them over the years. The devotion, love and generosity of their grandparents will stay with them always.
Irene was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Louis Salemi; her brother, Louis Zuppardi; and her sisters, Mary Barbagallo and Josephine Cultrera. She is survived and will be sadly missed by her sons, Peter J. Salemi and his wife, Rosemary, of North Andover, and Charles Salemi and Joanne Tilas of Reading; her grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband, Brendan Ferrari of Hudson, Mass., and Peter L. Salemi of Chicago, Ill. She also leaves several loving nieces and nephews.
