Georgetown — George A. Higgins Jr., 90, of Georgetown, passed away Friday, June 20, surrounded by his family at his home in Georgetown. He was the son of George A. Higgins Sr. and Lena (Amero) Higgins, and for 63 years, the husband of Ruth (Jensen) Higgins, who passed away in 2009.
He grew up in Lynn and attended St. Mary’s schools. George was in the Merchant Marines from 1942 through 1944. He served during the “Invasion of Italy” on a Liberty Ship. After his service in the military, he worked for the Railway Express Co. as a driver from 1944 to 1975.
George and Ruth moved to Georgetown in 1953, where they raised their family, and then became chicken farmers for the next five years. Prior to his retirement in 1985, George was employed as a custodian at the Penbrooke School in Georgetown for seven years.
After retirement, George and Ruth traveled to Hawaii, the Canary Islands, then on to Florida, and a cross-country trip in their beloved motor home. Many of their weekends were spent with friends in Buckfield, Maine, at their campsite, or traveling with the "49er"camp group through New England.
George leaves behind his son, William T. Higgins and wife, Deborah (Rogers), and grandson, Chad of Newbury; his daughter, Debra Flate and husband, Neville, and granddaughter Lauren of Rowley, Sally (Peddle) Smith and husband, Lester, and their children, Kris, Jocelyn and Adam of Merrimac; his brothers, Jimmy, David and Paul; and sisters, Ellen Dulavitz, Sally DiPrisco, Dolly Murray, and Nancy Amidon. He was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and Russell. He also leaves behind his kitty companion, Ivan.
Everyone who new George, loved him. He enjoyed playing cards and bingo at the senior center. He especially loved to make people laugh. We will all miss George's positive spirit and attitude.
