Ernest A. Gilford

Groveland — Ernest A. Gilford, 86, passed away on January 25, 2014, at Amesbury Village. Mr. Gilford was the husband of Ruth L. (Saulnier) Gilford.

Born on October 15, 1927, in Lincoln, Neb., Mr. Gilford was the son of the late William and Minnie S. (Currier) Gilford.

Educated in Topsfield, he attended Topsfield High School, and Mass Radio School. Mr. Gilford joined the U.S. Army, and participated in the Occupation of Japan, following World War II in 1946. He served in Korea in 1947, and then was discharged. Shortly after his discharge, he was recalled to served with the 36th Infantry Division and participated in the Inchon Invasion. When he was honorably discharged in 1951, his many awards included the Army of Occupation Medal–Japan and the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star. Mr. Gilford worked for CBS Hytron and Kentron Electron Products before joining Western Electric, where he worked for 25 years as a tester, before retiring in 1987. During this time, he also repaired radios and TVs as a side job. He was a HAM radio operator with the call sign KB1BGW, enjoyed repairing antique radios, and for years, enjoyed attending races at Pines Speedway and Star Speedway.

Besides his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his children, Joan Parah and husband, James, of Haverhill, Mark Gilford and wife, Connie, of Bradford, Jane E. O’Hara and husband, Thomas, of Seabrook, Alan C. Gilford of Haverhill, Tracy A. Gilford of Groveland, and Daniel V. Gilford of Plaistow; several grandchildren; one great-grandson; and his brother, Elbridge Gilford of Topsfield. He was the brother of the late Bernice Frost and William Gilford.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral on Thursday, January 30, at 10 a.m., at the Groveland Congregational Church, Groveland. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Internment will be in Riverview Cemetery.
