Anthony S. Marchese, 88

Andover — Anthony S. Marchese, 88, of Andover, passed away Thursday, March 14, at Holy Family Hospital. Anthony was born in Lawrence, the son of the late Girolamo and Agata (Anzaldi) Marchese. He was educated in the Lawrence school system and graduated from Lawrence High School. He was the widower of Catherine (Ansaldi) Marchese.

Anthony joined the U.S. Coast Guard on Dec. 1, 1942, and served on the USS Poole DE 151 flagship of Division 22 T.G.21.5 as a Seaman First Class. He was then transferred to Belfast, Maine, until being honorably discharged in March of 1946 out of Boston, Mass. During his enlistment, he earned the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. When he returned from the service he started a career working as a presser for Grieco Brothers Clothing Company where he worked for 37 years, and was a member of the Sons of Italy.

Anthony is survived by a son, Gerald J. Marchese and his wife, Patricia, of Peabody, Mass.; a daughter, Roberta Contarino and her husband, Peter, of Salem, N.H.; his sister, Frances Sergi of North Andover; four grandchildren, Steven Contarino and his significant other. Jennica Anderson, of Andover, Stephanie Contarino and her fiancé, Matthew Davis, of Salem, N.H., Lauren Fanning and her husband, Josh, of Peabody, and Robyn Tuberosa of Saugus; and one-great granddaughter, Everly Fanning; and several nieces and nephews. Anthony was also predeceased by his sister, Maria Theresa Scapignato and his brother, James Marchese.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends will be received at visiting hours on Sunday, March 17, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Cataudella Funeral Home 126 Pleasant Valley St. Methuen. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Monday, March 18, at 11 a.m. in St. Monica’s Church 214 Lawrence St. Methuen. Interment will follow in Bellevue Cemetery Lawrence.
