Allan P. Jarvis


West Newbury, MA — Allan Perley Jarvis, age 94, longtime West Newbury resident, died peacefully on Sunday at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, surrounded by his loving family. At the time of his death he was the oldest resident of West Newbury and the holder of the Silver Cane Award.

Born in Bradford, May 21, 1918, he was the son of the late Antoine and Vivian (Goodell) Gervais. He was a graduate of West Newbury High School. After serving in World War II in the Army Air Force, he continued his education, receiving both a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a master’s degree in education from Boston University.

For many years Mr. Jarvis taught in the Haverhill Public School system, finishing his career as a Middle School principal at a series of schools in Haverhill, including the Tilton School. He served on the West Newbury School Committee during the time that Pentucket Regional High School was being built and was chairman of that committee at the time of its opening.

Allan was a member of the Haverhill Rotary Club, served on the board for the Council on Aging in West Newbury and was a Deacon at the West Newbury Congregational Church.

He loved painting, music, traveling, and enjoyed showing family and friends the many pictures he took throughout his travels.

In addition to his beloved wife, Mary (Whiting) Jarvis, of West Newbury, he is survived by his son, Allan Jarvis, Jr. and wife, Martha, of Merrimac, and many dear friends that have remained close over the years. He was predeceased by his brother, Phillip Gervais, of West Newbury.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main St., Merrimac. A Memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Highland Chapel of the Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Dana Farber JImmy Fund, P.O.
