Merrimac, MA — Mildred E. (Rhodes) Grasso, longtime Merrimac resident, passed away Tuesday morning, May 6, 2014 at Lawrence General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Sebastian A. Grasso, Jr., who died Jan. 26, 2007.
Born in the mountains of North Carolina, Mildred was one of 10 children of the late Harley B. and Lexine C. (Merrell) Rhodes. She met her husband, Sebastian, in Asheville, N.C., they were married after World War II and raised their family in Merrimac, Mass. Mildred worked as a cook in the Merrimac public school system for more than 25 years.
She will be remembered for her giving soul, independent spirit, deep rooted love of nature, at peace on her family mountain, sitting by the waterfall. She was a true Angel here on Earth and a caretaker for all things living on earth. We will miss her smile and her beautiful giggle-she will live in our hearts forever.
Mildred is survived by her three daughters, Brenda Rossi and husband, Guy of Merrimac, Marcia Grasso Bunnell of Merrimac and Gail Grasso of Hendersonville, N.C.; her son, Randy Grasso and wife, Cindy of Fremont, N.H.; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Marvin T. Rhodes and wife, Barbara of North Carolina, along with many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and a very special friend, James (JC) Justus of North Carolina. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was also predeceased by her four sisters and four brothers, Loyd M. Rhodes, Carrie M. Hyder, Velda G. Brown, Luther L. Rhodes, Harley B. Rhodes, Jr., Alice C. Reed, W. Marlene Connor and Franklin L. Rhodes.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main St., Merrimac, will be Friday, May 9, 2014, from 3 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity of the Holy Redeemer Parish, 4 Green St., Merrimac. Interment in Locust Grove Cemetery will be private for the family.
