Haverhill, MA — Shirley I. (Bready) Gifford, of Haverhill, just four days shy of her 87th birthday, died early Thursday morning at Penacook Place in Haverhill, surrounded by her family. She was the devoted wife of the late Earle H. Gifford.
A Haverhill native, Shirley was born in Haverhill on July 15, 1926, and was the daughter of the late Clarence M. and Alice (Evans) Bready. She was a graduate of Haverhill High School.
Shirley worked at Western Electric until her retirement. She was a longtime, active member of Riverside Memorial Church, as well as the BMR Club (Bradford, Merrimac and Riverside), and the Retread Motorcycle Club. Shirley and her husband, Earle, enjoyed many road trips with the Retreads. She always kept a beautiful home, knitted numerous sweaters for relatives and friends, and stitched lovely needlepoint and crewel creations.
Her survivors include her son, Paul Gifford and wife, Tricia; her grandson, Christian; two sisters-in-law, Doris Fraser and husband, Allister, of Hampstead, N.H., and Jo-Ann Leppard of Concord, N.H.; two step-brothers-in-law, Robert Beekler of Kingston, N.H., and Lawrence Beekler of Maine; one niece and six nephews and their families; along with many dear friends. She will be missed by them all and remembered for her kindness, caring and generosity of spirit.
She was predeceased by two children, Pamela and Todd Gifford, along with her sisters, Leona M. Bready and Hazel E. Melchior.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at Paul C. Rogers Family-Scatamacchia Funeral Home, 334 Main St., Haverhill, will be held on Tuesday, from 3 to 6 p.m. Funeral services at the funeral home will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m., followed by interment in Walnut Cemetery, Haverhill.
