Joseph P. Murphy, 88


Andover — Joseph P. Murphy, 88, of Andover, died on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Lawrence General Hospital. Mr. Murphy was born, raised and educated in Lawrence, and had lived in Andover for the past 60 years. He was a very active member and supporter of St. Augustine Parish in Andover, and until his illness 11 months ago, he worked as a consultant for Murphy and Beane Law Firm, Boston, taking the train from Andover every day. He served with the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division during WWII, and was involved with the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in battle two days before VE day, and after recovering from his wounds, was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, until July of 1946, as part of the Army of Occupation. He was a 1949 graduate of Boston University where he received his MBA in accounting.

The widower of Virginia M. (Strobel) Murphy, his family members include his sons, Terrence Murphy and his wife, Stephanie Slon, of Iowa City, Iowa, Dr. Kelly P. Murphy of Palo Alto, Calif., and Shaun P. Murphy of Andover. He also leaves his daughters, Joy and her husband, Alan Briand, of Salem, N.H., Erin and her husband, Harry Craft, of Longmeadow, Mass., and Colleen and her husband, Mark Olson, of Salem, N.H.; his grandchildren, Justin, Michaela, Shannon, Toby, Oona, Allison, and Jennifer; and his brother, John Murphy of Methuen. He was predeceased by his son, Taidy Murphy.

ARRANGEMENTS: There are no calling hours. Private services will be held and burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Andover.
