NORTH ANDOVER — William J. Callahan. passed away peacefully due to complications from Parkinson's Disease.
William served on USS Puget Sound aircraft carrier during WWII, during the Korean War he served on the USS Block Island aircraft carrier. He received the WWII Victory Medal, the Pacific Theater Medal and the Korean Medal. Bill worked 22 years at Honeywell in the woodmill in Lawrence, along with working part time at Sylvans Liquor Store and the Yellow Cab Co. He lived the majority of his life in south Lawrence until moving to North Andover in 1998.
Bill was instrumental in helping the Bread and Roses Festival established itself in Lawrence, and participated for many years. He was a proud member of American Legion Post 219, an active volunteer with Sutton Hill Nursing Home and Academy Manor, working with veterans as well as running a men's club. Bill sang with the Vocalaires in North Andover and the Choral Group at Ashland Farms. Bill was a member of the Garrett Players and was fortunate to represent the United States in Finland.
As a member of the Community of Gods Love and Saint Michaels Church where he was a lectern, a member of the third order of the Franciscans he lived the Franciscan way with peace and compassion. As a member of the Merrimack People for Peace, and the Veterans for Peace you could see Bill in Shawsheen Square most every Sunday through all kinds of weather holding his signs for peace. Bill was a gregarious man, always positive, always upbeat and proud, always had a good word to say to everyone which tended to rub off on everyone he knew.
He will be deeply missed by his children: Mary Merrifield of Florida, Kevin Callahan of Eaton, NH, Kathleen Magardo of Andover MA, Elizabeth Pettis of Merrimac MA, Tim Callahan of Rochester NH, and Sheryl Cinseruli of Beverly MA as well as her ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
