Claude Gallant, 87


Andover — Claude Gallant, a former plant accountant for J.P. Stevens & Co., died Monday, December 24, 2012 at Lowell General Hospital. He was 87.

He was born in St. Alexis-de-Matapedia, Quebec, Canada and graduated from the pre-university Fernand Girard, an affiliation of Montreal University. For the past 66 years Mr. Gallant lived in Lawrence. He was employed as an accountant all his life, and most recently worked as a consultant for the City of Lawrence in the Community Development Department.

During World War II, he was an ROTC cadet at Montreal University. He was a Korean War veteran and served four years of active duty with the United States Air Force in the continental U.S. and was also stationed with the Third Air Force at Brize Norton, England.

Mr. Gallant was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a former member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where he served as secretary of the Particular Council of the Merrimack Valley. For over 35 years he served as an active eucharistic minister, first at Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence and later at St. Augustine Church in Andover. He was also an altar server and a hospitality minister at St. Augustine Church in Andover.

Mr. Gallant was also a member and supporter of the Immigrant City Archives. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved music, and was especially fond of American musical comedies. His favorite musicals were "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Singing in the Rain." He also enjoyed traveling to and reading about the historical sites and architecture of New England.

He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Rose Marie (Gallant). He leaves a daughter, Marybeth, of Milford, Mass., and a son, Andrew, of Sandown, N.H. He also leaves one brother and two sisters, all of Canada, and was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday December 28th at St. Augustine’s Church in Andover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday followed by burial at St. Augustine’s Cemetery in Andover.
